Matthew Johnson has been involved in athletics his entire life and decided to put his focus on playing basketball in high school. He was a 3-year varsity basketball player at Adlai E. Stevenson High School and helped win the Illinois 4A State Championship in basketball in 2015. Matthew then went on to receive a full scholarship to play point guard for the Division 2 Gannon University Golden Knights in Erie, Pennsylvania. Here he was able to make the NCAA tournament and was named to All-Conference honors his senior year. His participation in team sports and training for his own on court performance led to an interest in strength and conditioning and fitness.
Matthew has several years of coaching experience assisting the basketball program at Stevenson High School. Along with that, he also has a strong background of on court skills training with local middle and high school basketball players. Some of the athletes he has trained have gone on to receive either Division I or II scholarship offers for basketball. His passion for basketball skills training along with an expanding knowledge of strength and conditioning allows Matthew the ability to work with youth athletes on both their skills as well as enhancing their performance in the weight room. This combination of having an eye for improving an athlete’s skill on court and knowing how to properly design a training program specifically for them and their weaknesses will put the athlete ahead of their competitors. Matthew is also very passionate about helping anyone in need of guidance in health and fitness. He works with a wide variety of clientele from stay at home moms to corporate executives helping them reach their weight loss and fitness goals.
Throughout high school and college Matthew trained at SPEAR, which has given him a great head start getting familiar with proper program design and coaching skills. He continues to grow as a coach by furthering his education and pursuing new certifications to expand his knowledge so that he can be a better trainer for his clients and athletes. His passion for becoming better and helping others makes Matthew a great addition to the SPEAR Team!
